We know sports fans are missing the thrill of watching live sports, and whilst there’s talk of some sports making a return in the next couple of months, it’s still a way off. So to help tide you over until then, we’ve put together a list of the best sports documentaries to stream. 

Smashing Glass Ceilings: The Women of WWE – Channel 4

The 2017 documentary follows Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks, two of the most popular female stars in WWE, as they prepare for the biggest match in their careers. It also looks at how the match changed the world of professional wrestling.

Born Strong – Amazon Prime

The 2017 documentary looks at the four strongest men in the world, the 400 pound giants Eddie Hall, Brian Shaw, Hafthor Bjornsson and Zydrunas Savickas, as they compete for the crown of World’s Strongest Man. 

The Last Dance – Netflix

The docuseries looks at legendary basketball player Michael Jordan's career and the Chicago Bulls. It shows unaired footage from the 1997–98 Bulls season, as they went for their sixth NBA title in eight seasons and Jordan’s final season with the team.

The Redeemed and the Dominant – Netflix

The documentary looks at a group of athletes and questions of endurance, doping and overall toughness as they compete at the Reebok Crossfit Games. 

Sunderland Till I Die – Netflix

The series documents Sunderland Association Football Club (SAFC) and its fans, in the club’s first season in the Championship after being relegated. The club's fans are some of the most passionate and loyal in sports, but their passion is tested following SAFC's relegation. 

Formula 1: Drive to Survive – Netflix

The documentary series gives an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and races of the 2018 and 2019 Formula One World Championships. 

Fittest in Dubai – Netflix

The 60-minute film documents the first ever CrossFit Sanctional event in the world. Top athletes from around the globe test their fitness in the four day event.

Andy Murray: Resurfacing – Amazon Prime

The film documents Andy Murray’s devastating injury, taking you on his journey from inside the surgical theatres to his home. This is an extremely intimate look at the tennis player when he’s most vulnerable.

All or Nothing: Manchester City – Amazon Prime

The ground-breaking documentary series follows Manchester City during their record-breaking 2017-2018 season. It includes exclusive behind-the-scenes dressing room footage, delving into the players’ lives on and off the pitch. 

Cheer – Netflix

The six-part docu-series follows the highs and lows of the Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas. The documentary looks at the team and their backgrounds, whilst they prepare to compete in the National Cheerleading Championship under the direction of Monica Aldama. 

All or Nothing: New Zealand All Blacks – Amazon Prime

For the first time ever, the legendary New Zealand All Blacks allow cameras into their secretive world to witness one of their most difficult seasons ever. The rugby team is known as the winningest team in global sports history. 

The 1981 London Marathon: An Historical First – BBC iPlayer

In March 1981, the very first London Marathon was held with just over 7,000 running the race. This year’s event has been postponed, with over 40,000 set to take part in October. The documentary looks at that historic first event.

Brothers in Football – ITV

The documentary looks at South London amateur team Corinthian Casuals, as they set out to play against FIFA World Club Champions, SC Corinthians Paulista. Fulfilling an abandoned tour from over 100 years ago.

Game Changers – Netflix

The 2018 documentary follows UFC fighter James Wilks embarks on a quest to find the optimal diet for human performance and health. It features interviews with athletes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrik Baboumian, and Dotsie Bausch.
